Breed Description

The Border Leicester breed was founded in 1767 by George & Matthew Culley of Fenton, Northumberland, England and used as base the breed developed in the earlier 1700's by Robert Bakewell. Blakewell was the first to utilize modern animal breeding techniques. His work later influenced Charles Darwin and Gregor Mendel. Word of his work also reached the colonies and was of great interest to George Washington. The Leicester Longwool is known for it's long curly fur. Such a fur is not available in a woven form, so my sheep are shown recently sheered.
