Graue Gehoernte Heidschnucke

Graue Gehoernte Heidschnucke

The Graue Gehoernte Heidschnucke (GGH) or Grey Horned Heath Sheep is the symbol of the Lueneburger Heide, the heath area between Hanover and Hamburg, Germany. It is a beautiful rugged area covered with heather, bicycle paths (the soil is sand) and narrow roads for horse drawn carriages. It is a popular area for family get aways, back to nature.

The GGH is a very old, hardy breed which has survived on the heather and birch shoots of the heath for centuries. The lambs are born solid black and turn a silver grey (the actual color of the sheep in the photo) after their first sheering. There is something about the two tone loook of the GGH that I find extremely appealing.
