Beulah Speckled Face Ewe Nose to Nose with Her Lamb

In the late winter, in the mountains of Wales, you can see hundreds of Beulah Speckled Face ewes and lambs in the fields - quite a spectacular sight. This sweet lamb seems a little shy and has taken to peeking out from underneath her mama. The ewe has wool fur, a stone body and porcelain head and legs. Her tiny lamb is made entirely from porcelain and is covered with a soft woven wool.

All my creatures are handcrafted in my Asheville, NC studio using porcelain, castable stone and imported woven fur from Steiff-Schulte in Germany.

Breed Description

The Beulah Speckled Face is a breed of domestic sheep from central Wales and have a very structure similar to the Welsh Mountain sheep. I think they are a very handsome breed, but the farmer who owned the flock that I studied said they were the dumbest breed he'd ever raised. I wish I had inquired further.

This breed is most common in Eppynt, Llanafan, Abergwesyn and Llanwrtyd Wells, it is named for its distinctly patterned black and white face, which is free from wool. Ewes, which are naturally polled, are often crossed with lowland rams such as the Suffolk, Texel or Bluefaced Leicester to breed mules, and to produce market lambs for meat. Average Beulah Speckled Face ewes weigh 52 kg (110 lb), and rams 86 kg (190 lb). -- info via Wikipedia
